God didn't literally kill death, it's pretty clear that it's saying he rose above death and subjugated it.
And all of this is supposed to be taking place at the End Times, not just some thing that Jesus did during his life.
It's bad wording, but not entirely wrong. His salvation is explicitly referred to as "eternal life" - that is, no death.
But he's not killing death by any means. People will still die, and in fact the second coming will involve a lot of souls being sent to oblivion. Depending on how you interpret the Bible, of course.
"Killing" doesn't make sense, neither does "destroyed" as I saw in other translations, but I get what you are saying.
