Not to defend criminal scum too much but... One might have a grasp of a language well enough for daily life but legal jargon is really hard so getting an interpreter would be a smart thing to do.
I live in a bilingual country and even the politicians on one side of the language border can barely speak the other. I have noticed one rising politician manages to get asked interview questions in one but always has to respond in his mother tongue on anything complicated.
Nah, he’s 100% right. If you’ve ever worked in a restaurant with Mexican kitchen staff, you know they play these games. When it is advantageous to speak or understand English, they magically speak and understand English. If a situation arises where it is better to be ignorant, they will magically forget all English.
A lot of conservatives think it’s crazy that illegals can live and work for years without learning the language. The truth is that most of them could easily get by using English. They gain a ton of plausible deniability by pretending not to understand. Plus they get to assault the culture by injecting their own language everywhere.

The fact that there is any signage at all in Spanish in my country fucking infuriates me, because as you say it is an attack on our culture. I hate it and I want these cretins driven from my homeland.
Most immigrants have a weird time. People expect you to be heavily accented and not understand English, even when it's a common language spoken around the world.
Arnold Schwarzenegger can sound American if he wants, but people demand he keep his accent. I sound pretty dang American until I stub my toe.
Jean Chretien generally spoke Eeeenglisssh, even for harder questions, even if he clearly was more used to French. But he was a rather unusual politician, I guess.
