A restaurant I frequent plays '80s top 40 countdowns. Damn near every song is worth being on those countdowns. Tons of variety and talent.
A different restaurant I frequent plays contemporary pop. It's all awful. Nearly everything sounds the same. Even in the rare instances where the music isn't completely worthless, the lyrics are vapid garbage. Were it not for the people I know working at the place, I'd never set foot in there based on the music alone.
Jumping on the top post for visibility:
For anyone (probably no one) who finds their way back here like I did, and realizes the original video is gone, here's a repost.
And if that gets nuked, hit me up. I downloaded it this time, and can rehost it if needed.
Just like with tv/movies most of the music I listen to is older. Granted I’ve had people recommend new stuff that’s good so I’m not dismissing new stuff. Or stuff like that Rich Men North of Richmond. I downloaded it to support him
There is a lot of good stuff out there nowadays, you just have to find it. I'm a huge metal and punk fan, which are both experiencing a revival right now after those two genres were torn to shreds by poor quality and unoriginal bands being shoved down our throats from 2005-2010. After that period from 2010 to about 2018 the genres felt dead, with little creativity and very few indie bands that were worth your time popping up. Nowadays, with the music industry having moved on each genre has been revived with grassroots bands that actually sound unique and have their own flavor, while still having certain classical elements of the OG metal and punk groups of 1990-2005. It's a great time for people like me.
I'd be interested in seeing a list of some of your favorites, if you feel like it.
Of course. My personal favorite newer stuff includes Suasion, Moodring, CZYK, We Are Brave New World, Light the Torch, As We Suffer and D.R.U.G.S. All bands that I quite enjoy. There are also countless other songs from other bands that I like and just haven't listened to anything else from.
Cool, thanks!
I think I've heard of one or two of them, but they're not ones I'm super familiar with, so that's a bunch of new music I can try out.
NP, I enjoy finding very small bands on YT to listen too. Many have more unique sounds or at least try to do something different as compared to the mainstream. Hope you enjoy!
Cool. What are some good modern day metal/punk bands?
I might watch the full thing later, but for now I skipped around, and have a few thoughts to share:
A) I knew very little of the more modern stuff; sometimes not even artists, almost never songs. Plenty of those people I'd never heard a single song of.
B) It's amazing how even ten years ago was such a marked improvement, mostly. The (early) '10s still had their issues, but some of that shit is downright nostalgic compared to what's happening now.
C) Personal taste, feel free to roast me, but Imagine Dragons is alright, and I think they're one of those bands that deserve their fame for having a unique sound, even if it's not everyone's taste. I've always defended Fall Out Boy for the same reason; it was so cool to hate on them at a time, and they weren't really my thing, but the music was distinct, and I'd defend that.
D) Back to the early '10s stuff ('10-'14 and sporadically after that), it's amazing how again, compared to today's stuff, it had a more motivation and aspirational bent. You don't hear that much in popular music nowadays. Even the rap back then had more chance of being positive.
E) A short one: Fuck "Take Me to Church." Decent musically, terribly degenerate, smarmy, self-congratulatory virtue-signaling garbage. Really not a fan of that garbage.
F) People love to hate on Bieber. I don't feel the need to, I just don't engage with his stuff at all. That said...absolutely cracking up at him "rapping." Oof.
G) Last one: Ariana Grande. She made the list a few times. She's not a great artist. Is she just famous for dressing skimpy, singing about sex, and having a lot of sexy shots in her music? I looked up Side to Side, and she even got outdone musically by Nicki Minaj in her own song. Oof.
A decade ago the music industry started to shift from everybody chasing trends and sounding somewhat familiar by accident to everything being made to sound exactly the same to be able to be pushed out the door faster, make more money and promote further degeneracy. Nowadays everything pop is just terrible in every facet except for making catchy beats to hook people, while at least further back the songs sounded similar yet different enough that they felt natural and not manufactured. Most "artists" nowadays are just pretty faces and actors to play a part in pushing culture destroying music that assaults our ears every day.
