I'm not sure this makes as much sense as it did when our country's people were basically coming from the same culture with the same set of values.
This also comes from the idea that people would use FACTS and LOGIC to determine what the best ideas, as expressed by speech, are. This is a naively optimistic idea that doesn't appear to be borne out through the course of our country's history.
Similar to the second amendment. Take one look at the 85 IQ jungle of our inner cities. Do these people seem like they should have guns?
That's the most frustrating part...if our current gun laws were actually enforced equally...these people wouldn't have guns. They cry and cry and cry about 'common sense gun laws' while refusing to enforce the laws on violent repeat offenders.
These people can have guns...after they serve their 30 years in prison for all their criminality, or whatever.
It's absolutely absurd! I'm more pro-gun than plenty of the people outspoken about the issue; I think felons, once released, should have all their rights restored. But I also think people who repeatedly show they're not willing to operating within society without violating the rights of others should be locked up for a long time.
What happened to 'do the crime, do the time?' Get these animals off the streets and if, down the line, they show they're actually willing to reintegrate, all the better. But sweeping it under the rug obviously doesn't work, and they need to face the consequences.
