My two youngest nieces still play with barbies all the time. But that's a sample size of two. I can't recall if the older ones did the same when they were younger.
Who is actually going "Yes, I want a feminist take on an iconic American doll franchise that literally nobody buys anymore except maybe a 5 year old girl that embodies the pink stereotype"?
A shockingly large amount of women, who don't care about any of that but love the "pastel" the art style is going for, as well as Ryan Gosling being a literal marketing meme.
Its almost entirely built for the "played with them as a kid" angle, not the actual children playing with them currently demo.
It's not like they make movies ppl want to see. The theater biz is almost extinct.
They tried to cover it up by having 1/2 to 1/3 the seats of an old cinema, charging 15 dollars for tickets, and running a gross restaurant out of it. Which I mean that's the model now, but total audience is way down.

If I actually want to sit through a movie, sitting up, a theater is a.good place to do so. A family is going to think twice b4 buying 5 tix.
Since tix were 4 dollars, the price has at least tripled where most prices only are 2x the same time frame.
