Simple, don't play with randoms online. Especially not with voice chat. I don't, because it's a cesspool of bullshit. It's not some targeting females thing.
Women have in their head that things are targeted to them because they are female. It's not. I was telling a woman last week that was going on about the whole car dealer tried to screw them with all the extra shit to sell thing. Except they do that shit to everyone too. One place I used to go tried to sell me brakes I'd just replaced myself less than a thousand miles before. Or most recently some windshield wipers to replace the ones I had put on the day before.
I personally don't understand the appeal of multiplayer. I game when I don't want to socialize. I can imagine gaming with people I know, but I'd never play with a bunch of randos.
I guess I did in my Warcraft days, but that was a long time ago. There was enough mature people in the community way back then that you could find fun people if you tried hard enough. You could also find some assholes.
Never have since though. Even went I went through my FPS phase I never talked to randoms at all. I either play with people I know in person or by myself.
The main appeal for me is that nothing gets my heart pounding like FPS multiplayer.
Randoms can be really annoying, but the majority are just regular dudes like you and me.
This past week I got the classic, "I'm going to rape your mom" comment from a teammate. Rather than go to reddit and cry about it, I muted him and kept playing.
Edit: I should mention that in the 4 years since I returned to FPS multiplayer, I've gotten maybe 5 teammates who said shit like that to me. I think this problem is made out to be much worse than what's actually happening.
I was in a GTPlanet forum recently and called out the forced DRM in Forza 2023.
I was told that hopefully, I didn't have a phone or email account if I didn't like this push for constant connectivity in everything.
I apparently didn't have room to talk if I did.
Because technologies that were expressly designed for communication from the outset are totally the same as products being designed first to entertain THEN get adapted around communication.
The amount of cope I see on that site is truly pathetic.
Isn't it crazy how people can be like that?
Literally having nothing else worthwhile in their lives other than video games and therefore being perfectly okay with bad design choices that let them get away with using online games as substitutes for real life human interactions and experiences?
Sounds like those Diablo devs, “don’t you guys have phones?” I bet most of the people you were interacting with grew up always connected and really only play the current game. They can’t think ahead at all and in their minds why would you ever want to play the has-been once it’s gone?
I'll bet it's because of chumps like those that game preservation is such a criminally low priority these days.
They can't possibly consider the idea that just because a franchise gets a new game doesn't mean it replaces the previous games.
Every game is different. The people I interacted with refused to understand that simple concept; not everything that was in the precious games will carry over to the new ones in the same way.
Even if they did, the context and structure in which the mechanics and content are used will be different from game to game.
