By accounts, they didn't just kill him off, they had him captured by diversities, tried and called an alt right extremist, resurrected his wife to denounce and divorce him(remember, her dying is why he became a vigilante to begin with) and then had him kill himself.
Leftists have always hated The Punisher. I remember Joss Whedon had a huge bug up hiss ass about how Frank Castle never accidentally killed any civilians, he said it was NRA fascist bullshit. I guess Iron Man shooting lasers and missiles or Cyclops blasting buildings apart with his eyes and never causing any collateral damage is perfectly acceptable, but a trained soldier who carefully prepares and picks his targets with military precision is a bridge too far.
