Do Mario or Link even talk at all in most of their games? I don’t think so. The Pokémon protagonists certainly don’t aside from a couple “yes/no” dialogue boxes. You can argue that they’re probably talking at certain points and we just don’t see it, but the actual dialogue does not exist.
It’s a meme that Red (the protagonist of the first set pair of Pokémon games) actually doesn’t speak, because when you encounter him as the secret boss in the second pair of Pokémon games, his text box is just a string of ellipses, a trend they continue when he appears in the fifth and seventh generation games as well.
