They were literally trying to make it sound like they were white cops.
Truth is, they were ghetto cops. They were cops that came from, lived in, and worked in, the ghetto. These cops were of the community they served. And a beating like this in one of those communities, isn't even remotely abnormal. Ghetto Civilians would have murdered him directly; those Ghetto Cops were literally trying to replicate what they thought professionalism looked like with some minimal training.
The ugly truth is that it's actually pretty close to community policing. But white, cosmopolitan, urbanite, eggless women are shocked... SHOCKED... at how violent the poors are from time to time, and expect much better than this from their daily dose of NPR.
I could be wrong but didn’t it come out that they were dirty cops specifically targeting a rival drug dealer or the lover of an associate’s girlfriend or something? Not that I disagree with anything you’re saying.
Not as far as I'm aware, though my knowledge may be out-dated. All I remember hearing is that they, themselves, had been individually involved with drug issues in other departments.
There are absolutely some departments in these blue Hive Cities that have "Training Day" bullshit going on, though.

If I recall correctly, the victim had started hooking up with the ex of one of the cops, and the cop got angry over that.
