Who was upset about Twilight? At the time the books came out I was working in an office that was like 75% female and a lot of them were reading it so I bought the books out of curiosity and read the series. I don’t recall any men being angry about it. The author wrote something that appealed to a lot of young women/teens. No issue with that. My beef is that there seems to be an issue writing something for boys or men today
Ironically, most people I knew that were angry about it were other women. Because they hated Bella for revealing how boring they all were.
And because they were super mad everyone was making fun of their vampire husbands for sparkling, despite the Anne Rice women being just as cringe as Twilight ever was.
The best way to describe Anne Rice is that she hated the idea of Tom Cruise as the main character for the adaptation of her book because he wasn't hot enough like she wanted, then saw it and became so horny for him she 180'd and started putting out ads in the newspaper out of her own money about how amazing he was.
She is the epitome of "go make your own" for girls who want to touch themselves to vamps.
The younger generations were laughing constantly about it. The relationships were cringy and borderline abusive, and the mythos was an absurd fanfiction that tainted vampires and werewolves for a whole generation. Oh, and the love interests were both underage (being an immortal teenager still means you're a teenager) yet grown woman all over the world were fauning over them.

Haven’t read any Ann Rice but recently bought some of her books at a yard sale

You're right, I don't recall anyone being upset. It was more a case of this is just gay and lame.
