Things are worse in the US than in countries with actual 'socialized healthcare', like the UK, Sweden and Finland though. I don't know why. There is more government oversight of medical procedures in such countries, which has its upsides and downsides.
Because the US has let the private health insurance industry dictate law. And with Citizen's United effectively making corporations people and money = speech that means nothing will change, at least until the next civil war.
