I don’t get this push for women in football. Technically a woman could play and I could see a female kicker but watch the crap any male player would get of the kick is blocked and the female kicker gets knocked down
Women consume far more than men. I think it's something like 80% of all consumption can be tied to women. Women own more wealth in the USA than men do. Businesses at the high-level know this so marketing to women is extremely important.
I'm not sure where you're from, but in America, it isn't happening. The WNBA has been hemorrhaging money, propped up by the NBA, since it was founded. Futurama dunked on them (0:14) years ago (which is good, because they cant dunk themselves). Soccer has a niche here, but I've never heard of anyone following the women's team besides a minor burst of interest during the World Cup. As far as I'm aware, there hasn't been a women's pro baseball league since 1954, when the AAGPBL closed up shop. About the only sports where enough people watch to pay them good salaries are tennis (which is also kind of niche, nowhere near the popularity of the other sports here) and MMA (where they benefit from being part of a scheduled, mixed fight card, even if they are not the headliners).
As you know if you've been following this sub, though, they are trying to push the whole "women in X" narrative with basically everything. What you're probably seeing is Americans rolling their eyes at yet another attempt to force this.

The rest of the “developed” world has realized that women's sport is a pretty enormous, largely previously untapped market.
It’s massive, over here.
Yadda yadda “Women’s soccer sucks”, every time I bring it up, but seriously, this is a trend that is very unlikely to reverse, any time soon…
And no, I don’t think they’re as good as men. No, I do not “prefer” watching women’s sport. And no, I am not a simp.
But seeing many Americans constantly pretend this isn’t happening is just… Kind of funny, frankly.
Reality is, marketers have well and truly realized what you just said, and they’re catering to that increasingly, as time goes on…
