If my internal organs were shutting down from a vitamin deficiency, my first question would be "which vitamin should I be taking?". But no, his orders were apparently to drink a v8 every once in a while. There's absolutely no way this is true.
The only explanation for this, other than "he's lying", is that it was a severe thiamine deficiency. There's only one real reason this would ever happen outside of starvation conditions: extreme alcoholism. Like the kind where you don't eat food any more.
