Unpopular opinion, he shouldn't have dived in to try and save them from a rip current if he didn't know how to deal with a rip current. Especially since in the end he was the ONLY fatality. The original group managed to save the original victims.
It's heroic but he died for essentially no reason and his family would probably rather have him around
Even with knowledge, I doubt many 60 year olds can physically pull off what is necessary to save 2-3 younger adults from a current with just his bare hands.

Maybe so, but at least he went out trying to do some good in this world. That places him above a great many people in my estimation.
