This may sound petty but I was at my local used book store this past weekend and in the sci-fi/fantasy section I saw some books by NK Jemison that had literally been collecting dust and it looked like they haven't been touched in a long time. The section has a ton of great older content so I wasn't surprised, but fair or not I compare NK Jemison with Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarekesian.
Women who enter a predominately male hobby and play the victim to get companies to bend the knee. There have always been female fans of sci-fi/fantasy but a true fan doesn't demand that the hobby suit them. I would imagine fantasy is more of an even split between male and female fans but I would definitely say more guys are into sci-fi simply due to the fact that it is a genre that is constantly attacked for being toxic. I used to keep up with the Hugos and various awards and would buy anthologies of the previous award winners in sci-fi/fantasy and sometimes horror.
I remember hearing about the whole sad puppies thing and thinking that the sci-fi community wouldn't stand for it. Boy was I wrong. And it still irritates me that Jemison won three straight Hugo when greats like Asimov, Clarke, or Heinlein didn't and she seems to be unable to actually talk about sci-fi and instead complain about racism. I remember getting into arguments in the youtube comments section on the Hugo awards ceremony when she won. I simply said you can't honestly tell me that she won based on merit. I was attacked for being racist and then I asked the person if she was a black woman that was an avid Trump supporter do you think she would've won? They didn't answer.
So anyway, I know it is petty but it made me happy to know that people in my local area have some taste.
Plenty of good female s.f. and fantasy authors who are NOT shitheads. Or at least not rabid social media shitheads, and who predate the current SJW virtuesignalling literature movement.
Robin Hobb C.S. Friedman C.J. Cherryh Connie WIllis Ursula LeGuin
Add Larry Correia to the mix. Monster Hunter International is deliberately campy, funny as hell, over-the-top with explosions and monster guts and he's stated in interviews that he just wants to write fun, escapist, brain-candy stories that people will enjoy reading.
And I remember him getting attacked for simply talking about the importance of escapism.
There are more than a few of my favorite authors that I had no clue were women
Andre Norton for one. I have quite a few of her books
Absolutely. I’ve read books by some of them. All these modern publishers have done is make it to where someone won’t give a female author a chance because they constantly promote the SJWs.
Also I enjoy crime drama/murder mystery and there are a ton of female authors
This is more on the manga side of SF and Fantasy, but Hiromu Arakawa is the woman who wrote Fullmetal Alchemist, and her work is fantastic.
