Proof yet again that, in Canada especially, democracy/republicanism is still just an experiment the elites let the public dabble in when they feel like it.
I would probably also place France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands, and maybe a few other Western European/Latin American countries in that basket…
In essence, “democracy” is just a mask they use to deflect criticism, while doing thoroughly undemocratic things…
Honestly, I think it's much less what the elites "let" us do, as it is what people will actually stand up for.
Everyone wants their political issues to be solved by someone else. They want to go to work, pay taxes, and live in material comfort without conflict. Today's political climate is the result.
Canada is one of the worst countries in the world for pandemic tyranny. And yet, three weeks of protesting by a few hundred core people brought out thousands of supporters and caused every single province to back off mandates, even if the federal (global) government is still hanging on and, even then, it caused the opposition party to finally get their shit together.
Democracy is the rule of the people. Don't expect it to work if no one will get off their ass and contribute.

Same with Australia, NZ, Ireland and the UK…
