Its not about the sex, its about breaking and destroying a person. Its a not uncommon point of view for messed up people to use sex like that as a weapon. God damned Tarantino has Sam Jackson do it in a mainstream movie. Most rape in general works under the same schema.
It seemed ok during the MLK days
Nation of Islam is older than any of MLK's actions. Even during MLks own life, guys like Malcolm X were going around being complete terrors. They've simply scrubbed most of that from history to paint blacks as unfairly oppressed to make Civil Rights look incredibly binary.
Lots of things have happened to exacerbate the issues, but the issues were always there.
That's my point though. Its not been in the background, its always been a problem. Its just been buried so hard you don't even realize how bad its always been.
Look at the Nick Sandmann case for a microcosm of it. An entire massive event, framed as racism and this huge thing between whites and Indians. Yet not a single peep was ever uttered about the Black Israelites who started the whole thing and did a lot more damage across the board right then. Those guys aren't new either.

In a symbolic way, could this be deemed "buck breaking?"
I don't doubt that it's always been there in the background but it's gone from a mild case of food poisoning to stage 4 cancer.
I'm just wondering if the best course of action is to remove all safety nets to let it burn out as any intervention seems to fuel the fire.
