It's rude, and the person who wants to break contact should be an adult and tell the other person that. I genuinely think it's a cowardly move. Imagine dating someone for months and then being ghosted with no explanation as though that's not cowardly. The ghoster just wants to avoid a tough conversation and doesn't have the courage to be fair.
When I was doing online dating it happened a few times. Usually we would be messaging to the point where I’d ask to meet up for coffee or something. They would agree and then ghost.
