Well yeah, dialects differ. Doesn't make it not a dialect.
The fact that you know to use 'they' as a possessive, shows that it just has different rules, and that you know this.
It’s redneck culture from the South from many years ago that lingered on to today through them.
I completely agree that it is a dialect and has rules to an extent, the ‘to an extent’ part being that most people’s criticisms of those using it is that they aren’t actually saying anything, they’re just cursing and using slang to cover up that their speech has no content.
“Sheeeit, nigger! Bitch nigga fuck sheeeeit. Fuck ass bitch nigga.” A lot of what people say when they speak that way is basically that.
You can use it to say things of note, but nobody does, and it seems to have only developed to obscure the fact that someone has nothing to say.
And I completely agree with this.
I agree, but that is not due to the merits (or lack thereof) of the language. It's just more useful to speak a language that more people speak.
If everyone else spoke what is now Ebonics, and they spoke Standard English, they'd be better off switching to Ebonics.
Absolutely. English has been a literary language, and that helps a lot. It is more suitable for writing.
I'm not defending it as 'culture' though. I'm defending it as a legitimate dialect, no more. The idea that some dialect is somehow better because it originated from where the political center is located is quite bizarre.
Even if only Ebonics disappeared and was replaced by standard English, they'd still be better off. But for the reasons I have stated earlier, not because there is something inherently wrong with a dialect that is not standard.
this dialect showed up because they were too retarded to learn what they copied properly
not because iz dey culcha. none of them sat down and thought "well, to represent the black community better, i will now speak like an ape"
That's not how it works, mate. They copied the speech of the lower-class Southern overseers, who spoke like this because this was the dialect of the area they were from. No better, no worse, than standard English.
Just out of curiosity: why do you talk like an ape by not using 'ye' for the nominative instead of 'you'?
Did you not learn English properly?
i just got got... i don't speak old English... sheeeeit iz ma culcha nigguh whachu gon do?
Oh ye of little faith. 'ye' isn't Old English... dummy.
But my question stands. If it is OK for you to say "me am not using 'ye'", why is it not OK for some dialect to use the nominative for the possessive, i.e. "they house"?
