I have to get a background check as a doctor, but we don’t do them for people who want to purchase rifles?
Excuse me? Maybe I just have an unfortunate lack of knowledge on how other states do this (living in Illinois, I had to have one to get my gun), but I could have sworn background check was a national thing.

Not if the deer is wearing Kevlar, man. And you can't own a cannon. You know the thing. No amendment is absolute. Salute the marines.
But, yeah, this is just another gun lie in the long list of gun lies. If purchasing from an FFL (i.e. everything but a private person-to-person sale), you have to pass a federal background check.
If you buy from a Federally licensed firearms dealer, you need one. Some states allow for private sales and family transfers where you don't need one. They talk about gun shows. Most of the dealers at gun shows are FFLs so you need a background check.
If you do a lot of business but don't register, the Federal government comes and takes your shit, shoots your dog, and possibly you. I don't know exactly what the threshold is, but it seems like most people choose to comply.
I don't even see how it could possibly be the Federal government's business what you do within a single state, but I guess grabbers feel like the Supreme Court would ok it. The SC has done stranger things.

It is, they just keep attacking regardless
"We need psychic background checks."
"We need fortune teller checks."
