I mean, that's how it was back then, too. Not condoning or celebrating anything, to be clear, but this cultural (and economic) landscape is exactly how such "no reason at all" stuff starts.

Rotting culture, and destroyed economy lead to more people going to the fringes on either side, and deciding they need something more extreme to sort out the nonsense.
