I think people expected it to be Halo, not a generic sci fi show which shits all over Halo basics. Jackals using energy swords, Grunts not appearing for episodes. Covenant having one planet etc. You can make a bad Halo series and not make it super generic American sci fi.
Anyone who expected it to even be Halo must be new to this "adaptation" treatment.
Did they miss DragonBall Evolution a decade and a half ago? Death Note Netflix years back? Avatar? Half of the Xmen movies trying to do specific famous stories?
I truly envy someone so lucky to never have a favorite series get picked up by this point.
It had a series (that most people just call a movie) and two very short films. All three of which were literally made to hype up the games they were attached to and/or set up lore for new players. Which means they had very different expectations and goals, and were required to be as close as possible to the series.
Plus a bunch of animated series which are in a different ballpark (as the DCAU can tell you).
We predicted it would suck. It sucked. We are complaining that it sucked.

What did Netflix to do Deathnote?
Keep that ignorance, it'll make your world a better place.
Halo has several films that did reasonably well

But they never will.
Entertainment is not the point.
