Trump fucked up January 6th. His continuous narrative about the rigged election and the fantasy that the VP could overturn it convinced a bunch of gullible rubes that if they marched into the capitol, everybody'd go "golly, you win" and they'd get their God Emporer back.
He delivered the Democrats their Reichstag fire wrapped up in a bow, then he turned his back on the "insurgents" he helped create.
Even if you believed that Trump was right about everything, this was such a catastrophic political error that he definitely deserves criticism for it.
Even so, I'm pretty sure Shapiro was never in the "Trump is trying to overthrow democracy" camp, only "the whole thing was an massive fuckup" side.

That's fucking idiotic. The left got to riot without consequence for an entire summer, and a peaceful protest by the right was met with gunfire by the regime. Excusing this makes you either an idiot or totally craven, and probably both.
If you think the right gets to play by the same rules as the left in this world today, when the Left is the establishment, and the establishment constantly demonizes the right, you're an idiot.
That's not remotely how it works. "Never fight back" is a suicidal strategy; if Trump had pushed back on the election fraud, it would have been a minor media narrative like "russiagate" instead of a successful regime change op.
I wouldn't use the same tone but not too much to argue about here. Thickheaded boomers (some with tacticool gear squirreled away over the state border) got baited and didn't even stage a sitdown occupation. Not all, I don't blame the grandmas who walked into the building. But some.
I take a bit of schadenfreude at this because blustering patriot LARPers could be irritating in RL and on patriots.win.
You're right. Trump's failure to explicitly condemn the riot was a huge tactical blunder, especially if he's actually considering running again. Same with his strident insistence on exposing the rigging of the election. Even if it's true (and it probably is) it is political poison to have pursued investigations. It alienates swing voters or those hugely fed up with the Ds but hesitant about voting differently from how they always have. Trump's base would vote for him if he were proven guilty of murder in court. He needs to capture fed-up moderates, and there will be plenty more around in '24.

I'm not excusing it. I'm observing reality.
