I know people who blame their parents for being fat. In their 50's.
A teenager has the intellectual capacity to understand excess calories are stored as fat, and fat is used when eating at a deficit. A teenager also has the intellectual capacity to stop eating when it had enough.
My mother consistently served too much food to everyone. "Strangely" my parents were fat. I used to dump about 1/3 of the food in the trash after every meal and ask her polotely for less because of the waste.
She never made less... untill I started taking my plate before the meal and dump half of it in the trash, then eat the rest. Not long after I made my own meals anyway, but that helped her figure maby too much food made her fat, not muh thyroid and muh genetics.
So no adult has an excuse for being fat. They can explain what led them to consistently eat too much beyond childhold, but they cannot hand-wave it away as someone else's responsability.
Well, unless they are mentally retarded and someone else is still responsible to control their food intake. Or their parents beating them if they don't overeat, then GTFO that house about yesterday.
There is actually a physiological process wherein being obese as a kid makes it objectively harder to lose weight as an adult. Letting your kid get fat permanently ruins them by way of generating excess adipocytes, which do not go away unless they're physically destroyed. It's not impossible to lose weight in this state, of course, but it is significantly more difficult.
There is no excuse for being so goddamn fat you can't get in an amusement park ride, which is already designed to accommodate fat people. I don't care how many extra fat cells you have, you starve yourself in an empty room for a few weeks if that's what it takes.
Good news, your body hates maintaining "useless storage" and if you keep them empty, your body won't replace all the dying adipocytes ( they get replaced every few years ) so you will have fewer of them.
Keeping the now-useless adipocytes in the same number is a waste of energy ( fatties have a much higher basal metabolic rate than a non-fattie of the same age, height and genetics would ), and wasting energy like thst used to be very disadvantegous for survival.
Conversely if you keep overeating, your body will make more even into adulthood. It's a vicious cycle up to each person to make the effort to break.
It dosen't change the fact a caloric deficit will make a fattie lose weight, but it will influence how much hormones adipose tissues secrete to try and influence the fattie to eat more.
Harder to the mind, but won't change the numbers involved, despite what proponents of Cosmic Fat Osmosis claim ( the "fat people don't eat more, their body just holds onto fat" crowd ).
Thankfully humans have a brain capable of delaying gratification and make the choice to endure discomfort now, for better outcomes tomorow.
I used to be alot more sympathetic to the idea of government intervention to manage people's food consumption, but after 2 years of pseudoscientific sanitary circus :
For the love of God never give another inch to the government or they will make everything miserable for everyone because somewhere, a fattie will overeat if people are allowed to make their own decisions.
Eh, I could cut the teen some slack while they're a teen and living with their parents. Some people were just absolutely stupid when they were young. But once they leave the house it's 100% on them no matter what traumatic "issues" they're dealing with.
