Based on about any conqueror type I can think of from Khan to Napoleon, I'm just not seeing it in Putin. It's a scare tactic. I'll admit I wasn't convinced they'd push into Ukraine at least not as much as they have, but what are they saying is next, going after the Baltics? Then what, the whole of Europe? Should I be heading down to the Gulf of Mexico to shore up the coastal defenses? I just don't see it. Ukraine is of value to Russia, but just going bat shit crazy on NATO places isn't.
Putin wont go into any NATO countries, but wants to prevent more countries along its border from joining NATO. After years of negotiation between Ukraine and Russia, Ukraine seem to be on the road to joining NATO.

Putin isn't stupid, the rest of the stuff you're hearing is alarmism being used to manipulate and justify conquering Russia.
