The kids were fucked - probably literally - from the moment they were born to useful idiots. Children of NPCs live a miserable, hellish existence until they become old enough to turn into NPCs themselves. If they want to break that cycle by committing mass ritual infanticide in the name of Science, good. The less of them there are, the better.
