He didn't jump the counter and he never had his hands near the mother's neck, or even clothing attached to her neck, to strangle her. It's still reasonable to defend yourself or family in a struggle with a criminal who might resort to lethal force at a moment's notice, so him getting shot is whatever, but I prefer not to deal with exaggerations.
