It's fairly common for children to get mixed up in their sexuality especially as they go through puberty. It can be very easy to mix up who you want to be with sexually and who you want to become. However most people grow out of this if left alone as they get older.
When children don't have good relationships at home, or are otherwise very emotionally distressed they may become more attracted to a group of people who keep giving them compliments and positive reinforcement. It can act a lot like a cult, with trying to convince them that they should not trust or talk to their parents or family members about it. Even worse, giving them a place to stay and run away to, or drugs to take without their knowledge.
I have to wonder if I could have gotten sucked in if I had been in this generation. I always had both male and female interests, but a quick look at my genitals told me my gender and there was no confusion. I have been accused of acting like a man a number of times over the years, has never bothered me. I am ornery enough that I was never part of any kind of group think so I might have escaped it.
