I'm surprised how little outrage there's been over SMTV's white supremacy

SMT was already a niche franchise so it got very little discussion to begin with.
And all of that was on "Persona without the Heart" and "WHY THEY CALL MY ENBY 'YOUNG MAN' ITS RUINING IT!!!"
Any of them that went on were crushed by the difficulty quick, despite it being the easiest Atlus game in a long time.
I havent even played a single SMT game and even I know that the main character is a dude comprised of 2 other dudes.
Kind of a shame SMT is so little known, because it essentially spawned an entire subset of games.
His human form is quite androgynous, not helped by the absurd flower patterns on the uniform, so I could see the possible wrongful assumption. Heck even the localizers seemed to recognize that because the amount of times you get called "young man" are far beyond natural.
But you accept that and move on, because you shouldn't be putting your identity and hype into a pre-release self insert character to begin with like they all do.
And SMT has only itself to blame, because the only thing special it has by this point is its difficulty (that Atlus now sells DLC to remove). Persona has all the same demon designs and combat, and most JRPGs offer far better stories (unless you really love unironic "kill god" type plots). Basically every non-mainline game offers everything SMT has plus something else.
I enjoy and think SMT5 is a good enough game, but they aren't going to bring new fans in without doing a lot more.
It no doubt is but, like a lot of things in Japanese, it just doesn't translate well because we don't use words like that commonly in the same manner. Especially as a direct address to someone who we already are acquainted with.
Its one of those places where a localization is supposed to actually do something, instead of just taking the literal route and letting it sound awkward the entire game.
Especially as they could easily just plug your name in there and not have that section be voiced, as they do with literally every other character. That's "blank self insert JRPG character" 101.
Just use "Young" in front of the name like Joe Rogan
Pretty Anime Man says it’s OK to be White.
