I wonder if the greatest downfall of soviet union simply wasn't having enough circuses. That there exists a level of material comfort, that if met, any amount of authoritarian imposition is tolerated.
It feels like as long as you aren't boiling bark from the trees, you can substitute the rest with circuses. But the more bread, the less circuses are needed up to a point of diminishing returns.
It absolutely, 100% was that. Not just the USSR, but the whole Eastern bloc. We were poor as shit but we could catch glimpses of life in the West. If we didn't, we'd still be marching around every 1st of May waving red banners. Most of us, anyway; I hope I'm strong enough to resist that despite the consequences.
And that’s why they are so hell bent on destroying America. If they get rid of the beacon, authoritarian dickheads will sleep safe knowing their subjects have no remaining examples of freedom.
