I would just ask people, casually, what percentage of the population was black. Sometimes they would just say they didn't know, so I would assure them that it's ok to not know, I was curious about their guess. Most of the time I got percentages around 25 to 40%.
Then I would hit them with "well, it's actually less than 15%" and, if they were someone interested in thinking, they would find this surprising and asking why they might have thought it was so high is a good way to get the wheels turning.
That's all? If I were to look at their portrayal in modern media I would put them at a minimum of 60% of the population.

There are Gallop articles about how much Americans overestimate their black population. The average estimate is 30%. Many think it's more than 50%.
