Our menu was bland — mac and cheese, basic salads, soup and crackers, chicken burgers, tasteless fries — and served at the same times every day.
OH MY GOD, that's torture. I will cry for her being made to eat chicken burgers prepared for by someone else. I spend my actual free time making that for myself.
Institutional cooking HAS to be bland, because not everyone likes the same things, and allergies. But the kitchens themselves are usually pretty well stocked, and you should be able to ask the workers for the seasoning/spice of your choice (although if the place is deemed "dry", don't expect cooking sherry or crap like that.)
And there was probably actually more variety than she's letting on, but hey, drama queens and kings gotta drama.
... and yeah, no one likes to admit that paediatric abnormal psychology is a thing. There's some really dangerous kids locked up in some of those places.
Holy hell, that was real!??!?!

To me the food she listed doesn't even sound that bad in general. Like I have seen hospital food here, it's baaad. But this sounds okay.
