Agree with you on the comics 100%. Won’t touch a thing that Disney put out Star Wars related, comics and books; 2012 is the strong cut off line. Give me some 80’s and 90’s stuff any day over the comics they are pushing out today.
I don't have a problem with "lessons" in entertainment; old entertainment is chock-full of them. I have a problem with post-modern, inverted morality lessons.
Functional morality v destructive morality. The former has been been shown throughout hundreds of years to work, whereas the latter has produced nothing but chaos.

Anything pre Obama is basically the metric I go by.
Mine is 2014 or prior for the most part. Same with books. With comic books I mainly read back issues
