Not to mention it's written by some pasty-white, patriarchal, toxic-masculinity, misogynistic..... Japanese woman?
Huh, based.
Pros and Cons of being Gaijin in Japan:
Cons: No one trusts you, you're always an outsider, some places literally refuse service.
Pros: False sexual assault allegations made to extort money are specifically avoided being done against Gaijin, who are known to simply hurt the women who attempt it (traditionally, a woman will grab a man's hand on a train, and yell that he is a molester, leading to a rapid "settling" of the matter with cash payment, but non-Japanese Americans and Russians that have someone grab their arm forcefully and yell angrily and unknown... apparently default to face-punching). But the fact these types of things are known, the process and even targetting data, shows how much the false accusation thing is a problem there.
It is no surprise a mangaka, who is more in tune with the actual undercurrents of society than an ivory-tower-type, would know some of these concerns and incorporate them into their works. A big part of making good fiction is making it relatable, and a big part of making something relatable is not being in a ridiculously obtuse bubble.
What's also cool about that is there's no culture of chivalry in Japan, so you're not going to have some random white knight try to intervene when you turn around and slap the woman. (assuming there's even a Japanese dude bigger and tougher than you on the train, also unlikely)
I have it on some authority on the subject that, as long as you're not a flaming otaku, being a gaijin in Japan is a pretty comfortable gig if you're just the work and go drinking sort.
Those magnificent German beer-handling genes evidently count for a lot in terms of getting coworker cred.
