They were not a regular school.
Kids were stolen by the state from their parents, forbidden from speaking their native language or seeing their parents without supervision. They were taught their culture was evil and wrong.
That doesn't justify vandalism but you can't dismiss those things as "just a school".
Yeah don't let the manufactured liberal outrage fool you, the Canadian "residential schools" were a really fucked up part of history.
This is a purity trap, designed to make right wingers side with a genuinely shitty thing Canada did in the past.
Sounds similar to all the anti-white shit getting taught in schools now. Almost as if distinct peoples are better off thriving amongst themselves rather than being forced into an alien society and culture.
I think the evils are greatly exaggerated, and that it is quite good to try to teach people better cultures as opposed to evil and wrong cultures as Indian culture was then and Western culture is in an even worse way today, but even accepting them arguendo, it is quite absurd to speak of people as having "survived" them.
