Government loves security theater. It grants them control while restricting citizens. Remember planes before the TSA? Yet now we have massive government expenditures plus control on air travel, for no proven gain.
I've never understood the TSA. If someone was trying to bomb a bunch of people, why wouldn't they just detonate in the line instead of risking failure by getting caught?
The Boston Marathon bombing killed a grand total of 3 people. The theory might be that even if a terrorist blew up an airliner's worth of passengers on the ground, many would survive, while the same bomb on the airliner itself is more likely to cause a crash that kills everyone on board.

You could build a bomb out of things you can buy in the shops past the gate at any big airport.
But you won't have to, because it's easy enough to get anything past security anyway if you know what you're doing. Even during tests they miss the vast majority of the "smuggled" weapons.
Long term infrastructure damage would cause more actual harm.
Killing more people is an immediate threat, but doesn't reduce the ability to move goods or people and just makes people angry.
I've asked this a lot of times and you see people's brains just shut down because it's clear they're npcs and can't think about anything.
