It seems to be a quirk of human nature that rating systems skew towards the extreme.
People who like something a lot will rate it 10/10
People who hate something a lot will rate it 0/10
Other people who care about it will give it an honest rating and a detailed review, but this takes more thought and work than an extreme rating so they are in the minority
most everyone else who uses the product does not care enough to bother rating it, so the opinion of the mass majority is not recorded in the rating system.
I do it intentionally when rating things because I know most people only look at the total score, usually only high or low ratings will affect that score, and I assume many other people are doing the same thing.
The same effect is seen in politics and in the culture war once people started getting hyper-political. Everything became a negotiation tactic from extremes, hoping to win the middle. It's probably something from Game Theory.
Let's not forget the people who like "much controversial" content and are SocJus opposed to the people who dislike it will bomb it with 10/10 for the greater good regardless of what they actually think of it.
ignore the rating numbers, only read negative reviews, the truth tends to be in there
This is the first thing I do, you'll find hundreds of 10/9/8 reviews with <10 words but them dozens of actual lower star reviews with actual details.
Or even better stay away from review sites and make your own conclusion!

...i tend to ignore 5 star reviews,,, they tend to be bought or if your sony buffer's
Unfortunately, lazy people tend to see the world in binary. They don't even know what nuance means.
