The horror stories coming out of the VA have toned down a lot from what they used to be.
There were times when veterans were being abandoned in wards and discovered with maggots crawling on wounds and sores that weren't treated in un-air-conditioned facilities. To be clear, this was not the 2000's, but the 70's & 80's.
My favorite example is the guy who got frostbite on his dick after a VA nurse left ice packs on it for 19 hours, resulting in half of it needing to get amputated. This one was from 2012.

Hate to break it to you, but the maggots in wounds were also recent. The horror stories haven’t stopped they just aren’t reported nationally anymore.
