Fun fact, the original Cinderella story did not have a fairy godmother, it was the spirit of her dead mother that was helping her. I think Disney thought that would be to sad so they created the whimsical fairy godmother.
And in the original the stepsisters chopped off part of their feet so the slipper could fit. I recently got the original brothers Grimm fairy tales. A great buy.
Grimm fables and many stories and fables as such had very real and harsh realities that expressed human depravity. This of course was neutered when we decided children should not have to endure reality.
I have an old Grimm book as well, my grandma used to read to my mom from it. I doubt it is original though as I think the original should be in German but the book is ancient, falling apart, so as close to the original as I can get.
It makes for a great read to the children and is entertaining for me as well.
I have this old book that my grandma was reading stories from to my mom when she was a child and there is a lot of interesting stories. Now I'm reading them to my children.
For instance rapunzel is a sort of salad and the story has nothing to do with the Disney version, she is not a princess and her parents give her away to the witch as a payment for the father stealing a salad (rapunzel) from the witch. Is more of a moral story to teach girls to not get knocked up. The witch is not even that evil in the book. She wants to protect the child from the evil and corrupt world by keeping her in a tower. When she gets pregnant the witch kicks her out.

It would be cool to see like an anime adaptation of the original stories.
I hadn't heard of that one. Compared to some of the other stories that Disney sanitised, Cinderella's dead mother helping her seems rather tame.
