It’s like they can’t figure out how to make a compelling black or female backstory without making them a token, so it’s easier to take an established white male character and swap them.
Hmm, almost, but let me rephrase it. I think the issue is that they made the most iconic heroes white males, and they don’t believe they can make a black or female that can compete with them for popularity, not while they are still around.
How do you put the spotlight on “minorities” when white superman, white batman, and white spiderman, are so popular? Kill two birds with one stone. Just retire the old heroes and make new races take over their roles.
