And this is why “they” is awful as a pronoun. I take this to mean that the suspect tried to get back in his (or their) vehicle. But it could mean that the police officers tried to get back into their vehicle.
If there's just one, it's his/hers/its and shouldn't be anything else. "Their" is fucking stupid ANY time there's not more than one individual involved, frankly. I've never even liked using it for hypotheticals (we used to understand that in hypotheticals, the masculine was just a default that included everyone. But the shallow shitbrains couldn't grasp anything of that depth.)

Why would the police try to arrest a guy, then randomly try to get back to their squad car, then randomly shoot the guy? Did you think they had one foot in the door then decided to pop one off from thirty feet away?
