My older brother is the reason that I got into "nerd culture" since I read his sci-fi books as a kid as well as his comic books before I started collecting my own. Also, before he got too old for it we watched G.I. Joe religiously (imagine that cartoon on today). He a wife and three kids now so he is out of the loop for a lot of geek stuff, so when I told him that Amazon was going to have a Lord of the Ring show we both got a good laugh because the first thing he said was "so how long before the articles bashing Tolkien or whining about lack of diversity start"
It is so funny because with all the reboots/sequels I swear it is like clockwork to see articles from supposed life long fans of something that now "realize" all the racism/sexism in the original show/movie. I remember the gushing critic articles for Ghostbusters 2016 and it has only become worse since. I'm currently on the last book of Wheel of Time series and I've already seen articles calling it sexist and complaining about abuse to women. That whole Geeker Gate thing was spot on.
I wish I could figure my brother out, I'd be willing to bet similar to yours in that he's fully left politically, but not really otherwise. Talk about politics, it's all oh I'm so glad I didn't vote for a racist, free healthcare, guns suck, etc.
With his family, I haven't seen anything to even slightly suggest trying to make his kid into a girl, let's him play with nerf guns, violent video games, etc. Even encourages things other than sit and feed off the YouTube. Will wear a mask and follow Covid rules because a conformist, but doesn't behave in any way that suggests fear of the virus. Just for whatever reason can't question the rules.
The sad part is I don't think people with this mindset are going to question narrative at schools, for one, therefore extra brainwashing. Also is about to move to a liberal infested area from a red state. I think/hope there's a rude awakening, but not holding my breath.
For me, I just don't get it. Seem to have head on straight but the second politics get involved worship the left. It doesn't make sense.
Most of my friends are on the left, they do not like woke stuff in movies, they do not like the anti-white policies, they do not like the push for trans children.
They also believe Republicans are against gays, racists, evil etc.
They do not seem to notice a huge connection between the left and woke stuff/ identity politics and they do not care enough about it to vote with the side of pure evil.
But at least we have enough of a middle ground to remain good friends. I hide my politics at work but not in my private life.
My brother is right of center actually our whole family is that way. I do have plenty of leftie cousins though.
That's good at least. I could certainly see him saying something about a show like that, but the second you get near a politician it's all left
If you haven't had your faith in mainstream media duly shattered by some personal flashpoint, it makes sense that you'd swallow everything they say. Gamergaters watched the mainstream media lie in real time about things we could verify with our own eyes. That sort of experience isn't something you can simply hand off to other people. They need to experience it themselves.
