I've frequently thought one of the greatest triumphs of modern western propaganda is its ability to make people think everyone else believes it, so you'd better at least pretend to believe it also, lest ye be accursed...
Something like that, at least. But realistically, most people are mostly sane most of the time. Humanity is vulnerable, but resilient.
