I don't get it, a site worried enough about issues that they have the foresight to create a backup (great), but somehow keep having hosting with places like Amazon. I did better than that with my own cloud crap that's mostly personal use and not likely to be a target at all.

That's entirely possible, but ICANN-accredited registrars like GoDaddy are required to allow you to transfer your domain to another registrar, which they should have done long ago.
In fact, they should still be able to transfer the domain. If GoDaddy won't comply, they can file a complaint with ICANN. Of course, GoDaddy may just be dicks and drag the process out.
