It's damn depressing. Those early days of the net were amazing. There were always political differences, but the whole of the Internet carried a strong individualist and libertarian tone. And no matter if you were a leftwinger or a rightwinger, you believed in freedom of speech and expression.
Amazing how fast things have changed. Now the Internet has become the quickest and easiest way for the authoritarians to clamp down on dissent.

I think this is what I miss most about the Internet as I experienced it growing up in the 2000s and to a much lesser extent the early 2010s. There were tons and tons of people who thought like this back then. Where did they all go???
