I'm continuing my push away from big tech and want to upgrade my storage and backup solution so I'm not using their "free" cloud stuff or at least not reliant on it.
Requirements:
- Remote/mobile access: meaning I still want features like if I pic/screenshot on my phone it uploads it to the NAS like I do with a cloud now.
- Caveat to remote access: not reliant on third-party servers (excl. a dynamic DNS service)
- Automatic offsite backup -- I'm fine with it backing up to a hostile service, as long as it's encrypted and I control the keys
Bonuses:
- Plex Media Server support
- Dual hard drives: I'm not convinced this actually buys me much particularly with an offsite backup, but it lets me get more space on the cheap too.
- The more configuration the better, but I don't want to have to build a "server" from the ground up either for this.
Synology seems to be the closest I can come up with, but I'd love to save some money and/or learn more, so I figured I'd ask. There seem to be people here who would have experience with these things.
I have the scoop on a datacenter building with diesel emergency generators that will potentially go up for sale in the next year.
Now we're getting somewhere! Probably a tad out of budget for me but it meets the requirements!

Yeah I can imagine, particularly since I have horrible upload speeds. It would mainly be documents and pictures. I have no interest in backing up my Plex library--that would be a disaster.
Tape drive? Now that's something I forgot existed. You're not kidding either wow they are expensive. I'll probably back up a few things on optical discs as an extra backup too. Yeah, I'm probably over-killing it, but I tend to do that with these type things.
I hate to shill for anything but I use a backup service called backblaze, nearly 6.5tb I can get to remotely, but yeah... takes forever and would die with a bandwidth cap.
No shill since I'm asking for recommendations. I'd sort of heard of them but hadn't researched cloud backup yet. Decent pricing there. I wouldn't try to backup everything. I don't have a data cap (yet) but my upload speed is garbage.
Not sure how speeds compare but my first backup took around two months to finish (then just continually updates in background). I went for it when a hdd failure near ruined me...
FreeNAS + WD RED drives.
A few people have already mentioned Synology. They're solid for the price.
You asked about remote access. You'll want to buy a router that supports a VPN for remote access. It really depends on how comfortable you are with IT work. You can buy a linksys/dlink/whatever for cheap that will have VPN software to install. Since you most likely don't have a static IP you'll need to use DYNDNS.
Yes, I use QNAP solutions and I am happy with it.
