ok but can i use it without an account? i dont want to give away my number
Yeah, handing out your phone number seems like a good way to get compromised.
Nut up and pay $30 for a burner number to sign up. Not that difficult.
That's not the hard part, the hard part is WHERE to get the burner number that works. And why are they even asking for a phone number anyway they dont need it
Spam suppression would be my guess. Gab regularly turned near unusable with the bots that would sign up and spam.
My guess would be for stronger 2FA, since phones are less likely to be compromised than email accounts.
I tried a long time ago and it wouldn't take my VoIP number for authentication. Strange, even banks and such will use that #.
It's fine though, I'm going more from big tech to "own tech" for things now pretty aggressively. Right now, I've made up most of the gap with just some independent sites. Long term I'd like to come up with some sort of way to aggregate and filter sources into a Twitter-like feed. Twitter was the only big tech social media service I used anyway and even then it was a one-way exchange.
TFW we're going back to RSS feeds from 20 years ago
That was one of the things I was looking at actually. They still exist in a lot of cases. When main news sites do nothing but show MSM drivel it's what you're stuck with.
