Culture shock, sure, but the whole “Nordic model” is just a bit… Shit, honestly.

The whole country (that I have seen so far) feels like “Pleasantville”, but woke, and uber-modern, rather than 1950s Americana…

And the Turks. The fucking Turks here. Eugh…

Their rudeness seems more intentional than I would say it seems to be with more… “Native” Swedes.

Gonna be interesting learning to survive here. As a very “social” person, I… Certainly have some adjusting to do.

The strange mix of ultra-conformity and extreme cultural introvertedness is… A vibe. I’ll say that much.

Customer service? Ha…

Here, I’m talking FinTech specifically, but this applies to most other industries, too…

There’s a (very large, publicly-owned) transaction platform and online payment provider shutting down in Australia, next month. It started in 2006, and was useful because it allowed you to avoid card surcharges and bank fees. It was particularly useful for large, instant payments like for flights.

Why is it shutting down? Not because of a security breach, or any issues within the product itself, but because the Big 4 banks here want to kill off their competition, and have forcibly removed the ability for their customers to use the service. They then followed this up with relentless paid propaganda around “security” and how the system is “outdated, so use our in-house product instead”.

I encountered something similar from my bank, recently, while looking at overseas travel cards…

Yet millennials and zoomers lap up the propaganda, just like they do against cash, and think that anyone who still uses these products is a “tech illiterate boomer”. They actively called for the banning of the service I mention, because their banks told them “It bad. Trust us instead.”

Yet these same stupid fucks will happily sign all their private info and banking over to social media companies and shitty crypto exchanges, because “tech”, and shiny new thing, so must be good…

The Kool Aid sure is strong, with my generation and younger, smh… 😑

Can’t wait until we all get de-banked for not being woke enough, and then have no alternatives because we allowed them to develop monopolies on our finances, lol…

Maybe this is an ironic joke that I’m just not hip enough to understand, but Redfern is, and has been since the 70s, an absolute shithole.

Like, the closest Australia gets to a ghetto, pretty much… Abo central. Literally saw a drug deal in the middle of the street, between a teenage Abo and some old blokes, earlier…

It’s becoming “hipster” and “gentrified”, now, but it’s still an absolute dive…

The fact that Sydney has actual ethnic (Muslim, Indian, Leb, Portuguese) ghettoes even worse than this is… Impressive.

But anyway, the fact that they’ve opened a “Detroit style” pizza chain here is just… Too much self-aware hipster irony for me, tbh…

Opposite a barcade and a sea shanty bar. Because of course…

While the streets are full of filth, and the buildings literally fall down around it.

Straya. Love it…

I’ve spent a bit of today in one (for a job), and it’s… Honestly just kind of sad.

Everything is “branded” and based on some commercial IP. All the “independent”/quirky things I grew up with are gone, it’s fully cashless, much more expensive, and just generally… Super underwhelming. I’ve seen one pinball machine in the entire place. 😔

And still, the place is nearly empty. So if they’re trying to “appeal to different demographics” by pivoting to branded shittiness (fidget spinners! plants vs zombies! Fucking rabbids), it clearly ain’t working, lol…

Ah, I miss the 2010s, even compared to this shit…

This is the third time in the last month I have had an academic tell my class (different classes) that they have decided not to do final exams. Because "some students can't cope with time pressure" or "it's not fair on everyone" or "I don't believe in exams". They couch it in the language of "equity", despite the fact that it clearly screws over students who are good at exams/aren't as good as assignments... This, on top of making practicals "non-compulsory", or removing lab/field classes altogether...

This ain't my first rodeo. I've been around for a while. I've never seen this before, even in the years immediately post-Covid...

And this isn't gender studies. This is, supposedly, Science and GIS.

I'm not sure how widespread this is, but I've heard from other students that more and more courses are going down this route, all very suddenly...

This despite the fact that students are much more likely to cheat on assignments than exams (obviously), and the "threat" of things like ChatGPT.

Not just at my Uni, either. Apparently this is happening elsewhere in Aus... Though my Uni has been particularly spiteful about it, with the removal of after-hours study spaces, and things like not even allowing library access to part time students on Sundays (yes, really)...

Something is very, very rotten in the state of Denmark. Not sure if other people have seen similar, in other countries, but if this is the state of "Higher Ed", even beyond all the woke shit..? Wow, we are so fucked...

I just thought it was amusing, I guess. Three hours of lectures a week, theoretically about marine mammals, but I would say... 80% of the course content is about ideology, and "saving the planet"...

This is core. Can't avoid it. But it is insane to me that the Head of School, the person who supervises most of my courses, is so ideologically compromised that she essentially runs (STEM) courses like this as her personal ideological crusade...

Mid-30s woman, here. Looks exactly like you would expect. And she calls herself "old", in class, because of course she does...

That doesn't exactly reflect well on the University, I would have thought.

But anyway, I'm just there to get through this thing, and get my piece of paper, but it's still... Disappointing, I guess, that this is the quality of education I am dealing with.

Currently back at Uni for another go (sort of, it's complicated), and it's amazing to see how much the place has declined, after Covid, but even since the start of the year...

This particular Uni keeps scrapping student amenities and aspects of the student "experience", from free stuff at O Week through to removing the last remaining ATM on campus (!!), through to killing off most campus food vendors, and then, most importantly, massively reducing staffing numbers and quality, which affects everything from course offerings through to, of course, teaching quality. Hell, they've even sacked most of their "student interface" staff, which means that if we need to, say, sort out an enrolment issue, it is nearly impossible to get seen in person to have it dealt with... It's fucked.

The University in my home city (which is, for the most part, much better than the one I am currently at. Or at least it used to be) is even worse. They've unironically scrapped most of the food vendors and the University textbook shop entirely, from their main campuses, with view to forcibly closing all their main campuses in five years or so, and moving the student body into the city centre, against the wishes of students, the community, and even local businesses. But the Uni doesn't give a fuck.

What are students meant to do in the meantime? Lol, get fucked, essentially. Like, quite literally, they've hollowed out the campus, and left them with nowhere to go, and yet still the international students flood in...

I've been around these campuses, across Australia and elsewhere, for long enough now to know that this shit is not sustainable. Like, how long until (domestic) student bodies wake up and realise that they are being taken for a complete ride? Student fees haven't declined, they've only increased, as more and more facilities are scrapped, and as the teaching becomes little more than Youtube videos. And yet, because we are continually told "a degree is the only way to get a good-paying, middle class job", still the kids stream in.

I honestly just wonder how long it will be before people finally realise what a fucking Ponzi scheme this all is, if ever...

"Expensive day care for middle class adults" while also functioning as a degree mill for immigrants is a complete fucking joke, even compared to what this "system" was like a decade ago...

Of course, this varies by country, and Australia is worse than most, but the US system is at least equally fucked, if for different reasons...

Funny thing is, I have to pass two "transgender flag" road crossings, to leave the campus tonight. Because that's what this University spends money on. Rubbing that shit in your face at every possible opportunity.

Try speaking up, though? Yeah, you're gonna face some pretty severe consequences...

Lol, fuck this entire system.
