I love the show but considering the time we live in I have very low expectations. I’ll give it a chance though.
I ask this because the other day my oldest brother who is a total normie (plus in his teen years he was busy with one lady after the next while in my teen years I was researching UFO cases, reading sci-fi and buying classic rock and RnB records) was telling me about The Boys and was shocked that I wasn't watching it. I told him that I have some of the comic book and they are fine but that at this point I am just so sick of deconstruction or subversion.
I have the the Watchmen comic by Alan Moore and his life views aside it is a great comic. The only problem is that it spawned to this day so many "what if super heroes were bad" or "dark and gritty side of super heroes" stories. My two worst cases of these modern trends are the Last Jedi because I think Rian Johnson is a typical hollywood douchebag who thinks you aren't smart if you don't appreciate his movies and I question his motivations because I don't think he would give a beloved female character the "Luke treatment". Another example would be Ayra killing the Night King in Game of Thrones because while I enjoy her character in the books I can't help but think that their motivation was girl power and to say "well everyone expected Jon to fight the Night King" is a terrible reason to not do it.
Some good examples off the top of my head are Yoda in Empire Strikes back because it was an interesting surprise to see a little green guy after hearing about a great warrior/Jedi master, but there was a lesson there. Also, in the first Ice and Fire book or Game of Thrones season 1 I didn't see Ned Stark being executed because I thought he would be the main character throughout. Granted there is a pretty sad lesson there about the consequences of doing the right thing and being honest.
What are your examples?
I was at the used book store recently and saw a number of his books in the sci-fi section. They had a lot of Battlefield Earth copies which I saw at the dollar theater when I was in the Air Force and felt a dollar was too much, but to be fair a book shouldn’t be judged on it’s adaptation (Wheel of Time for instance). It’s just that with his books I can’t get past the whole Scientology things.
Just out of pure curiosity I do want to read Dianetics one day because that commercial was on a lot when I was a little kid. I want to see what all the fuss was about.
Sorry for the dumb question but I noticed I will be able to buy Starfield on Steam which is great because I was about to sign up for Xbox gamepass. I thought Starfield is an exclusive, so how come you can get it on steam?
Working from home most days allows me to listen to a lot of podcasts/youtube while I work and I came across Chris Gore's Critic Court and the first one they put on trial is Disney Star Wars. I'm biased of course and despise Disney Star Wars so it was fun to listen to it. The prosecution and defense members are pretty funny although for the most part the ones defending Disney remind me of pro wrestling heel that is playing a role except for one guy who was in the entertainment industry for 30 years parroting the Disney shills by talking about toxic fandom and Ryan Kinel showed him a sample of the death threats he receives.
As a massive EU fan my favorite part was over getting rid of the EU. In hindsight, seeing what Disney is all about I'm glad they don't use it, or I wish they wouldn't use it at all because they seem to cherry pick and bastardize. I wouldn't be surprised if the Ashoka show is a bastardization of Heir to the Empire or if the Rey movie had a big bad like the Vong. Too bad they can't just give the EU to fans and let them produce books/movies/video games. Darth Angelus for instance is doing a great job adapting Heir to the Empire considering that he can't make money and is just doing it for fun.
Anyway, check it out if you get a chance. Very funny and very good.
I was listening to Midnight’s Edge and he was going over the history of the proposed King Conan movie that never happened as well as the show that the stupid lady at Amazon rejected for being “too masculine”. Apparently the guy that would’ve been in charge would’ve been the same guy that was in charge of the He-Man animated series. You know the self professed fan who butchered the story. So the guy that has the Conan license decided not to work with Netflix.
Honestly this is a slam dunk. If HBO was smart they would do a Conan series with a hyper masculine lead,sex/nudity, and violence. It could be a hit for someone who accepts that pandering to “the modern audience” is a worthless endeavor
I ask because last weekend I found a bunch of Louis L’Amor books for a quarter a piece because the couple was moving so they just wanted to get rid of a lot. Also, found the Lonesome Dove book (may be multiple stories in one because it’s very thick).
One of my many nerd groups I’m is is one for pre-Disney Star Wars fans which is mainly an EU group and we were talking about how all these shill sites have so many good things to say about the EU now when I can remember them talking about how bad it was when Disney took over. Honestly that was my first awareness of the shill media because nerd sites who were pretty positive about the EU all of a sudden started crapping on it once Disney got rid of it.
Some of the guys see this as a positive sign but I guess I’m cynical because I think they just realize that the sequels and a lot of Disney Star Wars isn’t as popular as they want us to believe. Plus I hear the OT toys still sell pretty well.
So what do y’all think? Is this a positive sign or am I right to be cynical?
I saw that American Pie is getting a remake. The director will be a “female POC” who will give it a “fresh take”. Nothing wrong with a raunchy comedy that appeals to women like Sex in the City or ones that appeal to young men like American Pie or Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I’m sure she will do a garbage job and the shills will say it’s wonderful. Rinse and repeat.
To those outside of the U.S. have a great day. To those in the U.S. try to have some fun today. I’m about to go to my parents for a cookout and I’ll do my best to ignore the endless “Why America is so evil” posts and articles. I get the country isn’t what it could be, but I have hope. One of the most interesting 4th holidays I’ve had was when I was in the Air Force and was selected to have lunch with a Vietnam War former POW who was a retired one star. Cool experience.
Have a great day everyone, and now I’m going to squeeze in a little Skyrim before I head out.
As a life long comic book reader Superman and Spider-Man are my favorites because they are idealistic and try to see the good in everyone. I’ve never heard of this guy David Corenswet but he is saying he wants to be a bright and optimistic Superman which is good but it does annoy me because Cavill wanted an inspirational Superman movie. I really wanted him to get at least one more movie. I hope it’s good but it is the modern era and I know Nerdrotic said Hollywood would have a problem with a white male being inspirational so there is that concern. I hope I’m pleasantly surprised
If you had to place bets on it, which do you believe will be out first between ES6 and Winds of Winter? Tough one for me but if I had to choose, I would say Elder Scrolls 6. GRRM has shown that he has zero interest in finishing his series and I refuse to watch House of the Dragon or Dunk and Egg shows because he has treated Ice and Fire book readers like crap. I'll probably buy Dunk and Egg/Fire and Blood used so I don't give him money. Bethesda knows they can't keep delaying ES6 but it was a very boneheaded move to show a teaser in 2018!!!!
I read this leak/speculation on Bounding into Comics but considering it is Disney Star Wars I can totally see this happening. The working title is also New Jedi Order which leads me to believe it will be giving Rey what Luke's story was in the EU. I love how they didn't want to use it but feel the need to bastardize it. Like that Ahsoka series looks like an Heir to the Empire bastardization.
What would really crack me up would be to see Rey being a grumpy hermit on an island who has given up, and then wait for the critics to call it brilliant and subversive.
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m fascinated with the multiverse theory and will read up on any quantum physics essay about it, and that’s part of the reason I loved the show Sliders until it became the Kro-Mag show.
The other day at a yard sale I found a book that takes place in the 1950s or 60s in an America where the British stamped out the colonial rebellion which is a scenario I’ve wondered about. I have some Harry Turtledove who writes about the “South won” scenarios as well as an alien invasion during WW2 forcing the powers to unite.
Anyone have any other authors they read in this genre?
I was visiting my cousin a few weeks ago and was talking to his teenage son and asked him about how is dating life is going. He was telling me about a girl he is interested in and that she told him that during the summer she wanted to focus on college applications and stuff and that now wasn’t a good time for her to date, but that he is a great guy (the usual compliment stew a woman gives).
I was naive about such things when I was his age and apparently so is he. I told him some advice I got in the Air Force “if she isn’t enthusiastically saying yes then consider it a no”. I told him to move on because only in movies do women realize that they guy they rejected is the best for them.
Obviously you shouldn’t lash out or be abusive towards women and should handle rejection maturely but I can definitely sympathize with teenage boys and hate the whole incel or “nice guy” attacks. Sure being nice doesn’t guarantee you a thing but I can see how a teenage boy would get frustrated because they get all this dating advice and then women go for the guys who do the exact opposite. Just glad I was able to open his eyes and I hope he doesn’t waste time chasing that girl.
I cancelled Netflix when Cuties came out (final straw) but I saw that they are bringing back Blavk Mirror. When it first came out I watched it because it was like a modern day Twilight Zone in a sense. Although at the time I wasn’t quite aware of “the message” but I remember that episode like Star Trek kind of opened my eyes because they seemed to crap on classic sci-fi and made the white make nerd out to be evil while the girl saved the day. Little did I know that would be the norm going forward. I remember a review from shill media saying it stuck it to all the white male nerds who think the height of pop culture was in the 80s (weak argument because of the constant reboots of 80s material).
Then there was that one episode that got a ton of praise due to lesbians. I remember being confused because there were much better episodes. I can only imagine what they do with the show now. In sure it will be purely for the modern audience
I have peacock for the old old shows and WWE network and I saw a commercial for pride month (which of course is everywhere) one movie clip showed this teenage girl (the beacons of all knowledge according to modern Hollywood) in a church talking to a pastor or something and accusing the church of emotional abuse for teaching her to hate herself.
One thing in the Bible Jesus clearly states is that you will be hated and I love the idea that it’s emotional abuse to not affirm someone’s lifestyle. By all means if you don’t like what the bible says then go do what you want. The church has been condemning many behaviors for a long time. So if I cheat on my spouse and my pastor says I’m committing a sin I can just call it emotional abuse.
Gotta love the narcissist mentality that the Bible must change to suit you.
I’d respect someone more if they just said the Bible I’d full of fairy tales and went off and did their own things. I have struggles and temptation in life but I’m not going to try and justify them.
If so is it worth it? I’m thinking about getting it.
As a massive Heinlein fan I’ll say Starship Troopers because I think that’s a fascinating discussion about what you owe your country or the price of citizenship. Since Heinlein is my favorite author I’ll pick another one as well.. A Scanner Darkly by Philip K Dick. I know he had drug issues and this book is an interesting look at the cycle of drugs and addiction and the ending was tragic but also very realistic. I like that the movie included his tribute at the end.
I’m talking 80s/90s casting rules because I know a Skyrim movie today would be a black or Hispanic female protagonist. But I’d love to see a legit Skyrim adaptation, or a long series about the Dwemer.
A friend of mine told me. It’s called Social Justice Fallacies. I’m honestly surprised because I thought he was completely retired. Glad to see he is still working. I’ll be sure to pre-order soon.
I guess I'm a glutton for punishment because y'all have given me a mountain of recommendations for Anime/Manga to check out and having insomnia helps to get extra reading/watching tv time. I enjoy having so many shows to watch and mangas to read but I was wondering if anyone could recommend any that are western themed or were inspired by westerns. I guess something like 7 Samurai would work since that inspired Magnificent 7.
Also, so far it seems like anime/manga fans do the best job at gatekeeping. I say this because I see the most pushback against whiners about representation or "sexualization". I frequently see feminists hacks whining about pushback amongst amine fans when they want to have a discussion about the male gaze or something. I've reached the point to where I think anyone bringing up such topics should be weeded out immediately because they are poison for fandoms. As I always say, imagine how gaming would be if Zoe Quinn or Anita Sarekessian had been told to pound sand from day one.
