Undertale is bar none the most overrated piece of 8-bit Indy retro-faggot trash ever created.
I figure it was just the first game with meaningful replay consequences the normie crowd was exposed to, or at least the first one they could actually finish in order to start the replay parts. Add that "novelty" to all the "representation" and tie it all together with the oh so deep "lesson" of "just love and forgive people, they probably have emotional reasons for trying to kill you", slap on some cutesy "retro" 8-bit style (edit: which has the added bonus of letting just about any computer be able to run the game) and you have nice rock of normie video game crack.
